NATURE WALKS & HIKING:

There are many enjoyable nature walks and hikes convenient to the Campground or the Hartley Cottages. The campground itself is about one- mile in length and campers can enjoy an evening or morning stroll along the river or campground road. To get to most hiking areas in the state parks, state game lands, or state forest lands it will be a 15 to 30 minute drive. We maintain a supply of driving and hiking maps.

Buchanan State Forest offers some of the best hiking and nature walks. The wild and natural areas, Sweet Root , Martin Hill, and Pine Ridge are particularly nice. They are all located in Southwest Bedford County.

The Sideling Hill/Rays Cove area also offers some fascinating hikes. This includes two abandoned turnpike tunnels and the former site of a ccc and prisoner of war camp. Click on the Buchanan State Forest web site here. It is an excellent web site with detailed maps and information.

The State Parks (Blue Knob, Shawnee, and Warriors Path) have many trails, however you will have to visit the park or get printed maps to get detailed trail information. Click on the PA State Parks page here. The State game lands are also excellent for hiking. The Mid-State Hiking Trail runs through the game and forest lands in Bedford County. The PA Game Commission has excellent maps on its internet site. Click here.

Listed below are detailed accounts of some interesting hikes in the County.
