Homepage Information

What is a homepage?

A homepage is a site on the World Wide Web (WWW) much like the hypertext document that you are looking at. It can have information about yourself, or your business, "links" to other places on the WWW, pictures, and a way for people to send you email. People all over the world can view your homepage and read what you put on it.

Your homepage (maximum size of 2 Megs total for a personal account) is provided as part of your bedford.net account and carries no additional charge. You do not have to make only a single page, since your 2 megs space is like a box. You can fill your 'box' with one large item, or with several small items. This means that you can make MORE than one page.

You may install your homepage at any time, or update it at any time without a charge. You WILL have to inform us before you wish to install your page, because our server will need to be configured to allow you to upload your page. However, if you would like to be listed under "Our Customer's Homepages", send us an email so that we can put in a link.

How do I make a homepage?

To make a homepage, you can either learn HTML (the "language" homepages are written in), copy someone else's homepage, or download a hypertext editor to help you write the homepage. We will consider each of these instances.

Learning HTML is fairly easy, and several books have been written on the subject. Once you know the language, you would use any text editor to type in your document, and then save it with the .htm extension.

To copy someone else's homepage, use the Microsoft Internet Explorer, or other browsing software, to look at the source code. You do this by using the "View" pulldown menu and selecting "source". This will show you the source code for the document. You can save this code and then use your own words, thus creating a document similar to the original.

To download a hypertext editor, you search (using Yahoo! or a similar search engine) for a shareware editor. Download and register the shareware (most are windows-based) and use the "help" features to learn what you need to know.

Please note that all HTML documents on our server should have the extension .htm, NOT .html because .html will cause your page to not work. Additionally, be very sure that there are no spaces in the filenames. (This error is most likely to occur with Win 95 and Macintosh users) Spaces in filenames confuse our poor server and make the sysop irritable and snappish.

How do I install my homepage?

You install (or update) your homepage by moving a copy of the file to the hard drive of our server, which is most easily done via FTP. An excellent FTP utility is WS_FTP (for Windows and Win 95 users) and for those who own Macintosh computers, we suggest using Fetch.

FTP to "www.bedford.net" using NON anonymous login. Put your username and your password in the spaces for username and password. Don't worry about the starting directory on the remote location, as it will NOT let you put anything in the wrong place. When you are logged into the www.bedford.net server, highlight the file you wish to move on your computer, and select the arrow which points to the right (remote) location. This will move the file to our computer. As soon as you have done this, your homepage will be updated.

Should you have difficulty with FTP, you may also bring a disk containing your homepage to our office and we will update your homepage while you wait. It will be much faster for you to do it through FTP, though.

What is the address of my homepage?

Your homepage will be found at http://www.bedford.net/username/filename.htm where username is your username and filename is the name of your homepage file. HINT: If you name your main homepage index.htm, it will show up when someone just types http://www.bedford.net/username and hits the enter key.
